A celebration of our love for idlis...!



        The humble idli has gone on to become the breakfast of choice for millions of Indians and vies for stomach space alongside vada pav and poori bhajji.

        Gone are the days when making idlis was difficult thanks to the ready-made idli batter that is now available across supermarkets and Kiranas. Anyone can now make a good idli  ease, thanks to brands like ID fresh.
    
That’s the easy part, but what do we have our idli’s with?
    Let’s explore the different accompaniments that people enjoy with their idlis.
    
        A plate of idlis with a colorful assortment of chutney’s like the coconut chutney, mint chutney, coriander chutney, chilli chutney tomato chutney and the list can go on. Of course with a bowl of piping hot sambar.

    Idlis with Sodhi, a vegetable stew with coconut milk is popular in the south.

Podi Idli:
    
    The podi idli is a delight that one has to try. A mix of the idli chilli powder mix is made by adding gingelly oil or ghee into a consistency that can help in soaking and coating the hot idli's in the mix.

    Once the hot idlis are coated nicely they can be served with chutney or eaten as it is. Sastha or Idhyam

Dahi Idli:
   
    Known in Tamil as Thayir idli this is a simple dish that can be great for breakfast and also a good way to get some quality protein early in the day.

    Idli's are often had with delightful non vegetarian dishes in the southern districts of Tamilnadu. This is more popular for dinner though. I have mentioned some of my favorite non vegetarian accompaniments here.

Idli with Mutton Curry:

    This is pretty much a staple across Madurai city for dinner. Another tasty way to enjoy the idli mutton curry is with a fried egg sunny side up along with the idli and mutton curry

    You dip the idli into the runny yolk and enjoy it. It is a sight to behold at the Simmakal konar kadai watching the patrons savor this. You can also make this mutton curry at home with ease by using the Easy PandyannaduMutton kuzhambu mix.



Idli with Salna
Idli with Salna:

    This is another dish popular and enjoyed as a chicken or Mutton Salna. The Salna is a south style version of the Mirchi ka Salan .

    Doing a Salna is also simple now with products like the Easy Virudhunagar Salna that can be made in a few minutes at home.

    This is popular as a breakfast dish and served at wedding feasts that are held the morning after the wedding. Spicy mutton curry, goat liver and goat blood all served up on a banana leaf for breakfast are a hearty meal. You should get yourself invited to a wedding feast to enjoy.

    Idli and fish curry, especially the fish curry left over from lunch is used during dinner with idlis. It is also said that the left over fish curry tastes better the next day and hence has found its place on restaurant menus as Nethu veicha meen kuzhambu.(Yesterday's fish curry)  fish curry recipe

    Another popular fish curry variant in the southern districts is the Aiyre meenkuzhambu with idli. This is a small fresh water fish that is found in ponds that accumulate rain water and then dry quickly. The fish is pricey,and can go as high as Rs.2000/kg. Most of this is now bought by restaurants and served up as a specialty during dinner.
