Mutton curry day? You must be joking!

Mutton curry day? You must be joking!

We were beginning work on our annual marketing calendar and our team highlighted mutton curry day as a day to be celebrated.

Agreed that there is a day for anything and everything like Valentine’s Day around the corner but isn't this like taking it too far! A day for mutton curry?. Even a search on google does not spew any specific results for mutton curry day. It shows as Mutton Curry Day

We are not going to let google decide our love for mutton this time. We are going to celebrate the day like true mutton curry lovers and tell the world about all the great we have in India and how they can be enjoyed.

Mutton Curry

Madurai Kari Kuzhambu
India’s love for mutton curry is as diverse as the cuisine of the country. There are favourites like the Lal Maas in the North and Kari Kuzhambu in the south. I am listing out my all time mutton recipe favorites that I would indulge in during this month just to celebrate my love for mutton.
I was brought up on a diet of red meat and especially coming from the arid southern districts in Tamilnadu famed for its mutton you can trust me when it comes to good mutton curry.  After all we have the native goat breed of the district called the kanni which is perhaps the best goat breed for the perfect mutton curry.

The goats here feed on the dry miskeet scrub and other dry scrub that grows here. The goats develop good muscle by stretching by going on their hind legs to reach for the miskeet. It is believed that this gives the meat its texture and flavor that is so important to a good mutton curry.

A late uncle of mine could differentiate and tell you if the goat was grainfed or pasture raised on miskeet and scrub after a hearty meal of mutton curry and rice.

I am going to leave you with some of our favorite mutton curry dishes  that you can try this mutton curry day.

 Lal Maas:

If you cant get the Mathania Red Chilli the Kashmiri Chilli will suffice to make the Lal Maas.

Lal Mass

Originally a game meat dish made from meat hunted down by the Royalty in Rajasthan. This recipe is now being used more on mutton and can serve a tasty treat. lal maas

 Mutton Dhansak:

An all time favorite Parsi dish served with brown rice is a hearty mutton curry that you will love. Mutton Dhansak

Madurai Style Mutton Kari Kuzhambu:

This recipe is a simple recipe that can be made with ease and has its own origin in the cooking of sacrificial goats at Ayyanar temples that dot the old Pandyan kingdom. This recipe holds just the minimum ingredients that were available near the temples. Madurai Style Mutton  Kari Kuzhambu

A simple way to make this recipe is to simply buy a pack of the Easy Pandiyanadu Mutton Kuzhambu from Thillai’s. It requires only mutton and the masala pack along with edible oil and water.

 Virudhunagar Mutton Salna :

A foodies delight made famous by the Burma hotel in Virudhunagar which serves crispy parottas with its famed mutton Salna. The Salna though is only the corrupted version of the mirchi ka salan in Mughlai cuisine. Virudhunagar Salna

The Mutton Salna can be made in three easy steps today thanks to Thillai’s masala which offers the Easy Virudhunagar Salna mix. As the name suggests the dish cooks in three easy steps and tastes great with parottas.

We do hope you find the time to cook and savor these recipes and maybe cook a mutton curry meal for your loved on this Valentine’s Day.
